Indie Wednesday: Post-It Love

Post-It Love should make all the filmmakers out there want to pick up their cameras and start shooting. If I was teaching a class, I would make it a requirement to produce a short with no dialogue. Tell a story without a single spoken word. Film is a visual medium and films are often at their best when the images on the screen do the storytelling. It is an incredibly valuable discipline to learn.

If you aren't familiar with Charlie Chaplin's films, go find City Lights and watch the ingenious methods Chaplin devised to tell his story. Too often, dialogue and exposition are crutches for a filmmaker. If you're a hobbyist like us, pop in a Blu Ray and try to spot moments where dialogue could have been replaced by a visual.

And if you don't like that advice from some blogging chump, then go to a petting zoo and find an ostrich. Steal the ostrich and ride it across the country, only stopping every so often to plant watermelons. Maybe someday everyone will call you Freddy Watermelonseed.

Indie Wednesday: Bless You

Bless You shows us how far a little creativity can go. I love the mix of real elements and simple animation. A perfect use of the tilt-shift effect. A salute to Philip Watts for filling us full of the indie spirit this morning. Start with a good idea or story and forget about the rest, right?

8-Bit Iron Man

I'm guessing every 80s and 90s child can appreciate an 8-bit version of the first Iron Man flick. Bust out the NES, I'm ready to play. Anyone notice a MegaMan resemblance?

News and Notes 6.3.13

Back to the daily grind.

Vacation is over but that's good new for ye olde indie-film/nonsense blog. First of all, I have some nice videos lined up for the next couple of Indie Wednesdays; inspirational stuff that might make you want to pick up the camera.

Have you been keeping up with the Vine Movie project? Vine still isn't cooperating by letting us embed the debut of Tiebeereus. If those pieces ever become available, we'll get caught up to speed here. If you don't want to wait, just hop on over to the Vine app and search for Walk Softly Films.

One small bit of (pre)production news this week. While I was roasting to a beautiful beet red in South Carolina last week, I had a bit of new inspiration on an old project the guys and I kicked around a couple years ago. I'm planning on running the idea past them and either starting on a short or feature script. ...So many ideas, so little time.

See you back here on Wednesday.

Vacation's News and Notes 5.28.13

Hey, I'm on vacation everybody; so don't expect a great Monday update. Oh wait, it isn't even Monday. My bad.

Hopefully you were spending Memorial Day in a hammock or BBQing an Elk or painting a majestic bald eagle or something, rather than waiting for News and Notes.

In any case, there are lots of Vine Movie installments for you to watch on Vine or Twitter. You know where to find us. I'll post the newest ones here just as soon as the app lets me.

Vine Movie - Parts 6 & 7

The Vine movie got a whole lot sweeter this week. Say hello to Dr. Banjo.

Part 6:

Part 7:

Todd has already posted Parts 8 & 9 if you want to cruise over to Vine to check them out. The app has been acting a little flaky, so it may take us a couple days before we can embed them here. Stay tuned.

Part 3's News and Notes

Have you been looking for the next chapter of the Vine Movie? Were you gnawing your nails all weekend? That's understandable.

We're busy, it accidentally got posted on Todd's account, blah blah blah none of that MATTERS! What matters is that Todd has gifted us with another epic (and creepy) piece of the story. BEHOLD!

"When can we have more, guys?? I can't stand it!" you scream. Well, you get more TONIGHT! I'm up to bat and I'm kind of thinking you're going to get two installments for the price of one. Is that cheating? We'll figure that out later. It isn't exactly easy to tell a story in 6 second increments, people. And we're figuring this out as we go. I think sometimes we may need 6 seconds to react to the last piece and another 6 to set the up the next one.

Keep your eyes on the Twitter tonight, folks. Follow us you must.
In the meantime, you can find all the Vine Movie pieces here.

Vine Movie - Part 2

Allen has given us Part 2 of the Vine Movie project.  If you haven't heard the way this works, you can read all about it here.

Follow Walk Softly Films on Twitter and Vine for easy access and you'll be able to find all the pieces here under the Vine Movie label (it will have an actual title soon).

Indie Wednesday: Dead Space

I always love to see indie filmmakers take a crack at science fiction on a limited budget. Dead Space is as impressive of an attempt as I've seen in the live-action department. Primarily for what they did in production design and practical effects. Gotta love that suit and helmet. The production team was also smart enough not to overreach.

I love Dead Space even more because Eric Zaragoza, who leads the crew at Z Pictures, spent four years in the Marine Corps before heading to film school.
